Surviving Carnival on the Streets of DC


  1. Water: Use plenty of water. Water will quench your thirst and minimize dehydration. 

  2. Sunglasses: Wearing sunglasses will filter out the majority of harmful ultra violet light and save your retinas from damage. 

  3. Glitter: Minimize the use of glitter on your face. This reflective dust attracts the glare of the sun and increases the chance of burning your face. 

  4. Sunscreen: Apply and keep applying sunscreen during the day. This affords protection from sun exposure. 

  5. Emergency: In an emergency, all DJs will be instructed to have the left lane cleared along the parade route to facilitate movement by emergency vehicles. DJ’s MUST stop music and assist in clearing left lane. 

  6. Safety: DCCC and all bandleaders will reinforce safety in and around the parade trucks. 

  7. Safety: barriers are to be provided around the trailer bed and wheels. 

  8. No one is allowed to climb on or off vehicles while it is in motion.   

  9. No more than six (staff) people are allowed on a truck at any time. 

  10. Tie-down of band equipment and other general safety prerequisites shall be reinforced. 

  11. Masqueraders are required to follow the directives of the parade marshals. 

  12. All children shall be furnished with visible identification bracelets. Parents/Guardians, enjoy yourselves but not at the expense of your kids. Know where your kids are at all times! 

  13. Emergency stations are located at the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Georgia Avenue and at Georgia Avenue and Barry Place.

Alcohol It is against the law to consume alcohol in public in the District of Columbia without a permit.  That means drinking along the parade route could lead to confiscation or your arrest.
